What is autopay?
Autopay is a feature that allows customers to schedule recurring automatic payments from their chosen payment method. Enrolling customers in autopay can help improve on-time payments and reduce delinquencies.
Autopay Enrollment Options
Carpay supports two ways to enroll customers in autopay:
Customer Self-Enrollment (Customer-Initiated)
Customers enroll themselves in autopay through the Carpay app or web portal.Dealer-Assisted Enrollment (Admin-Initiated)
You can set up autopay for a customer from the Carpay dealer site when taking a payment or managing their account.
Customer Self-Enrollment
Customers can enroll in autopay on their own by:
Logging in to the Carpay customer web portal or mobile app.
Navigating to the Settings section in their account.
Navigating to the Autopay section within Settings.
Selecting the payment method they want to use.
Choosing the autopay schedule (due date, frequency).
Confirming and saving the autopay settings.
Once enrolled, autopay will run according to the customer’s schedule and charge their chosen payment method automatically on each payment date.
Dealer-Assisted Autopay Enrollment
You can enroll a customer in Autopay directly from the Carpay dealer site. Smart Autopay allows customers to make recurring payments automatically, either based on their normal payment schedule or through a custom billing setup.

Custom Billing Schedule

Editing or Canceling Autopay
To update or stop a customer’s autopay:
Locate the customer’s account on your dealer site.
Go to the Smart Autopay section.
Toggle the Autopay Enabled flag to off/disabled.
You can also edit individual payments if a customer wants to keep autopay, but skip a payment (for example).
Customers can also make these changes on their own in their web portal or app.
Other Actions You Can Take, After Autopay Enrollment
Other Actions You Can Take, After Autopay Enrollment
Once a customer is enrolled in Autopay, you can use Custom Billing Schedule tools to adjust how and when payments are drafted. A Custom Billing Schedule gives you additional scheduling flexibility without requiring manual individual payments each period.
You can:
Provide a one-time due date extension — move a payment due date to a future date and add fees if applicable.
Split an installment into smaller payments — break a scheduled payment into two or more amounts.
Build a custom payment schedule — change draft frequency (weekly, biweekly, monthly) and have installments draft until the balance is paid in full.
Note that these changes support Autopay functionality, but any formal loan contract changes must be handled according to your policies and loan documentation.
Autopay Best Practices
Confirm customer consent before setting up autopay on their behalf.
Verify the payment method details before enrolling.
Remind customers they can edit or cancel autopay at any time.
Use autopay to help reduce late payments and administrative follow-ups.
Important Fee Rules for Autopay
Due to Visa card network rules, Carpay platform fees or dealer convenience fees cannot be charged on recurring (Autopay) payments.
This means:
Fees may apply to one-time payments, depending on payment type
Recurring autopay transactions must be processed without added fees
This rule applies regardless of whether autopay is set up by the customer or by the dealer
Carpay enforces this automatically to ensure compliance with card network requirements.
