Joining a Teams Meeting

This article covers joining a Microsoft Teams meeting from your computer's browser, no app installation required and what to check if your mic or speakers aren't working once you're in, and how to dial in by phone if your computer doesn't have either.

Joining the Meeting

You can join a Teams meeting straight from your browser, no Microsoft account or app installation needed.

  1. Open the meeting invite (from email or calendar) and click the meeting link.

  2. When the Teams page loads, select “Continue on this browser” (do not choose to download or open the desktop app).

  3. Enter your name when prompted.

  4. Allow microphone access when your browser asks for permission.

  5. Select “Join now.”

Note

Depending on the meeting's settings, you may be placed in a lobby until the host admits you. Teams for the web is officially supported on Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome; Safari and Firefox may work but aren't officially supported.

No Speakers or Microphone? Dial In by Phone

If your computer doesn't have speakers or a microphone, you can still join the meeting on your computer to see the screen, and use any phone for audio.

  1. Open the meeting invite and find the “Join by phone” section — it includes a local phone number, a Conference ID, and a PIN, e.g. (phone number) +1 xxx-xxx-xxxx,,(pin) xxxxxxxxx#

  2. Call the number from any phone.

  3. When prompted, enter the Conference ID followed by #.

  4. Press 1 if prompted, to join as a participant.

Note

Not every meeting has a dial-in number — it depends on the organizer's Teams plan. If a number is expected but missing, check the invite for a “Local Numbers” link, or contact Carpay for support.

If You Have Trouble With Your Mic or Speakers on Mac

Browser (Teams on the Web)

If you use Teams at teams.microsoft.com, microphone access is controlled at two levels: the browser app itself needs macOS permission (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → toggle on for Safari, Chrome, or Edge), and the Teams website needs its own site-level permission inside that browser.

Browser

Grant / check site permission

If it's blocked

Safari

Safari menu → Settings → Websites tab → Microphone → set teams.microsoft.com to Allow

Change the entry from Deny to Allow, then reload the page

Chrome

Click the tune icon left of the address bar → Permissions for this site → Microphone → Allow

Click Reset permissions in that popup, reload, and allow when prompted

Edge

Click the padlock/tune icon left of the address bar → Permissions for this site → Microphone → Allow

Click Reset permissions, reload, and allow when prompted

Note

Chrome and Edge are both Chromium-based, so their steps are nearly identical. Safari re-prompts more often and doesn't sync permissions across your other Apple devices.

Tip

After changing any permission — in the browser or in macOS — reload the Teams tab (or fully quit and reopen the browser) before testing your mic again.

Desktop App

1. Allow Teams to use your Mac's microphone

  1. Click the Apple menu → System Settings.

  2. Go to Privacy & Security → Microphone.

  3. Find Microsoft Teams in the list and turn the toggle On.

  4. Fully quit Teams (Teams menu → Quit Teams, or ⌘Q) and reopen it — a permission change won't take effect until Teams restarts.

Note

Older instructions may say “System Preferences → Security & Privacy.” That's the pre-Ventura name for the same screen — use System Settings → Privacy & Security on current Macs.

2. Pick the right microphone and speaker inside Teams

  1. In Teams, click the three dots next to your profile picture → Settings → Devices.

  2. Under Audio Settings, choose the correct device from the Microphone dropdown (built-in vs. a USB or Bluetooth headset).

  3. Do the same under the Speaker dropdown, choosing the correct output device (built-in speakers vs. a USB or Bluetooth headset).

  4. Click “Make a test call” to confirm Teams is picking up your voice and playing sound back to you.

FAQ

Q: I don't see Microsoft Teams listed under Privacy & Security → Microphone at all.

A: Open Teams and start (or join) a call once — this triggers macOS to add Teams to the list on first use. Then go back and turn the toggle on.

Q: I turned the permission on, but Teams still shows no audio.

A: Quit Teams completely and reopen it. If that doesn't fix it, another app (Zoom, FaceTime, a browser tab) may be holding the microphone — close other apps using audio and try again.

Q: The mic works in other apps but not in Teams specifically.

A: Reset Teams' cached permission from Terminal, then relaunch and re-grant access when prompted: tccutil reset Microphone com.microsoft.teams2 (use com.microsoft.teams instead of com.microsoft.teams2 if you're on the classic/legacy Teams app).

Q: How can I tell if Teams is actually accessing the mic right now?

A: Look for the small orange dot in the Mac menu bar — it appears whenever any app is actively using the microphone.

Q: I'm in a meeting and still can't be heard.

A: Check the mute button on the in-meeting toolbar first — it's separate from the OS and device settings above and is the most common cause.

Q: I can't hear anything during the meeting.

A: Check Settings → Devices in Teams and confirm the correct Speaker is selected. Also check the volume in the macOS menu bar (Sound icon) and make sure the right output device is chosen there too.

Q: Sound plays through the wrong device (e.g. a monitor instead of my headset).

A: macOS and Teams each keep their own output selection. Set the correct device in both: Apple menu → System Settings → Sound → Output, and Teams → Settings → Devices → Speaker.

If You Have Trouble With Your Mic or Speakers on Windows

Browser (Teams on the Web)

If you use Teams at teams.microsoft.com, microphone access is controlled at two levels: the browser app itself needs Windows permission (Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → toggle on for Edge, Chrome, or Firefox in the app list), and the Teams website needs its own site-level permission inside that browser.

Browser

Grant / check site permission

If it's blocked

Edge

Click the padlock/tune icon left of the address bar → Permissions for this site → Microphone → Allow

Click Reset permissions, reload, and allow when prompted

Chrome

Click the padlock/tune icon left of the address bar → Site settings → Microphone → Allow

Move teams.microsoft.com from Blocked to Allowed, or click the reset icon, then reload

Firefox

Click the lock icon in the address bar → Permissions → set Use the Microphone to Allow

Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions → Microphone → Settings → Remove Website, then reload

Note

Edge and Chrome are both Chromium-based, so their steps are nearly identical. Firefox uses a different permissions panel, and sometimes needs the tab closed and reopened (not just reloaded) after a change.

Tip

After changing any permission — in the browser or in Windows — reload the Teams tab (or fully quit and reopen the browser) before testing your mic again.

Desktop App

1. Allow Teams to use your PC's microphone

  1. Click Start → Settings.

  2. Go to Privacy & security → Microphone (Windows 11), or Privacy → Microphone (Windows 10).

  3. Turn on Microphone access, then let apps access your microphone.

  4. Scroll down and turn on Microsoft Teams in the per-app list.

  5. Also confirm Let desktop apps access your microphone is On — this covers the classic Teams installer, separate from the per-app list above.

  6. Fully close Teams (right-click the taskbar/system-tray icon → Quit, or File → Exit) and reopen it — a permission change won't take effect until Teams restarts.

Note

Windows 10 labels this screen simply “Privacy,” not “Privacy & security.” The toggles are the same, just under a slightly different menu name.

2. Pick the right microphone and speaker inside Teams

  1. In Teams, click your profile picture → Settings → Devices.

  2. Under Audio devices, choose the correct device from the Microphone dropdown (built-in vs. a USB or Bluetooth headset).

  3. Do the same under the Speaker dropdown, choosing the correct output device (built-in speakers vs. a USB or Bluetooth headset).

  4. Click “Make a test call” to confirm Teams is picking up your voice and playing sound back to you.

A: Open Teams and start (or join) a call once — this prompts Windows to add Teams to the list. Then go back and turn the toggle on.

Q: I turned the permission on, but Teams still shows no audio.

A: Fully close Teams and reopen it. If that doesn't help, another app (Zoom, OBS, a browser tab) may be holding the microphone exclusively — close other apps using audio and try again.

Q: The mic works in other apps but not in Teams specifically.

A: Check Settings → System → Sound → Input (Windows 11) or Settings → Sound → Input (Windows 10) and confirm the correct device is set as default. Also check Device Manager for a driver with a warning icon and update or reinstall it.

Q: I'm on a work-managed laptop and the microphone toggle is greyed out or the mic still won't work.

A: Your device is likely managed by IT policy (Intune/Group Policy), which can block microphone access at the OS level and can't be overridden by the end user. Contact IT Support to check the device restriction policy.
